A meticulously planned knife and grenade attack in Taipei, Taiwan, left three people dead and 11 wounded, according to investigators. The attacker died by falling from a department store while being pursued by police on Friday.

Taipei Attack Planned for Over a Year

The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Chang Wen, indiscriminately stabbed passers-by and launched smoke grenades at a Taipei metro station and on the street before entering a department store.

Authorities have increased security at crowded locations and large events following the incident, which shocked Taiwan due to the rarity of violent crime.

During the attack, Chang changed his clothing and transportation methods multiple times, utilizing a scooter, bicycle, and walking. He also set fire to his apartment and damaged cars and motorbikes.

  • Chang Wen had been preparing the assault since April 2024, acquiring smoke grenades, gas canisters, and respirators.
  • The suspect had been planning the crime for a year and a half, and his motive also originated during that period.
  • Chang Wen was wanted by authorities since July for failing to report for military service and had previously been discharged for drunken driving.

“He was extremely cunning,” said Taipei police chief Li Hsi-Ho during a news conference on Monday.

Authorities stated that Chang Wen had not contacted his family for more than two years.

As of Monday, five injured individuals remained hospitalized, with one in intensive care but in stable condition after undergoing surgery.
