Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Admits Billing Errors After Inflated Charges

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board Acknowledges Billing Errors

The Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) has officially acknowledged that administrative failures in meter reading and billing processes have led to inflated electricity charges for consumers across the state. Following a surge of complaints from residents reporting bills that were several times higher than usual, the Board admitted that these discrepancies were not due to increased power consumption by the public, but rather due to systemic faults within the utility’s own operations.

Government Response and Remediation

Addressing the controversy on July 20, 2026, Tamil Nadu Electricity Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar stated that the government had been receiving complaints regarding high electricity bills for three days. Minister Nirmal Kumar assured the public that if consumers have already paid these excess charges, the additional amount will be adjusted in the next billing cycle.

The Minister also highlighted a significant staffing shortfall, noting that while the state requires 5,500 personnel to accurately calculate electricity consumption, only 800 staff members are currently available to perform this task. He indicated that instructions have been issued to ensure that electricity usage is calculated properly moving forward.

Context of Tariff and Billing Policy

The billing issues have emerged during a period of transition in the state’s electricity policy. The current government had previously announced a scheme to provide 200 units of free electricity to households consuming under 500 units. However, this initiative has faced public scrutiny and criticism from political figures.

Context of Tariff and Billing Policy

Premalatha Vijayakanth, General Secretary of the DMDK, has publicly urged the government to revoke recent electricity tariff hikes, citing the negative impact on farmers, small and medium business owners, and merchants. Reports have noted that while the 200-unit free electricity scheme was intended to provide relief, many consumers have expressed frustration over the return to a bimonthly billing cycle, which they claim has contributed to the confusion and financial strain.

Calls for Accountability

According to reports detailing the Chief Engineer’s circular, there is a formal expectation that strict action, including disciplinary measures, should be taken against officers and staff found to be negligent in their duties. Furthermore, the instructions mandate that Superintending Engineers must proactively monitor the performance of the officials under their control to ensure that billing processes are handled with the necessary oversight.
