A 27-year-old software engineer died early Saturday when his car veered off the road and into a 20-foot-deep, water-filled pit in Greater Noida’s Sector 150.

Yuvraj Mehta’s Final Moments

Yuvraj Mehta managed to call his father, Rajkumar Mehta, moments after the accident, saying, “Dad, I’ve fallen into a deep pit filled with water. I’m drowning. Please come and save me. I don’t want to die.” The call was quickly disconnected.

Rescue Efforts and Recovery

Police were alerted to the incident around 12:15 am and launched a search and rescue operation. Teams from the local police, fire department, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) participated in the effort, alongside Mehta’s father.

After nearly five hours, the car and Mehta were recovered from the pit around 4 am. He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was sent for a post-mortem examination.

Details of the Incident

Mehta, a resident of Tata Eureka Park society in Sector 150, worked as a software engineer in Gurugram. He was on his way home from work when the accident occurred.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Greater Noida) Hemant Upadhyay stated that preliminary investigations suggest fog and excessive speed may have contributed to the driver losing control. The vehicle reportedly crossed a drain before falling into the pit.

Resident Protests and Concerns

Local residents protested following the incident, alleging negligence by the Noida Authority. They claim similar accidents have occurred at the same location and that requests for barricades and reflectors near the drain have been ignored.

“Residents had repeatedly requested the authorities to install barricades and reflectors, but no action was taken,” one protester said.
