Tetairoa McMillan powers Panthers to 32-26 victory over Lions

Tetairoa McMillan and Bryce Young Star as Panthers Defeat Lions

Bank of America Stadium crowd chanting “MVP! MVP!” at his quarterback, Carolina Panthers wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan said he stayed zoned into the action on the field during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s 32-26 win over Detroit Lions. McMillan delivered a career-best performance in Week 4, hauling in 14 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns to guide Carolina past Detroit on Sunday night.

McMillan Sets Career Highs in Historic Sunday Night Outing

The reigning AP offensive rookie of the year commanded the passing attack with 16 targets, dwarfing his previous bests. McMillan caught a 32-yard touchdown in the second quarter over cornerback D.J. He added a 10-yard touchdown reception in the third quarter.

One of his most critical plays occurred late in the fourth quarter when he extended at the sideline to secure both feet in bounds for an 18-yard catch, converting a vital third-and-14. He joined Steve Smith Sr. as the second Panthers player ever to produce 175 or more receiving yards and two touchdowns in a single game.

Head coach Dave Canales noted that Young and McMillan experienced “not a great week of practice” and had to talk through several missed connections. Yet that friction vanished under the primetime lights.

Everything just clicked tonight, McMillan said.

Young expressed unwavering confidence in his top target:

I trust [McMillan] so much. We have so many banked reps from these two years — offseason, OTAs, all that stuff. … I know the player he is. He’s special. I always trust him, Young stated.

Canales added:

He was able to show who he was today, and I think that’s awesome because that’s the type of player he is, that’s the caliber of player. And to show it on ‘Sunday Night Football,’ there’s nothing better. So, I’m really, really happy for him, ESPN

Balanced Offense and Defensive Stands Secure Victory

Young orchestrated six scoring drives, completing 29 of 41 passes for 329 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, establishing a franchise record with nine passing touchdowns through the first four games. Running back Chuba Hubbard complemented the aerial attack by rumbling for 122 yards on 20 carries, averaging 6.1 yards per attempt and scoring two touchdowns.

On the other side, Lions quarterback Jared Goff completed 32 of 52 passes for 412 yards and a touchdown with no interceptions, connecting with Jameson Williams for six catches and 102 yards. Jake Bates added four field goals, including a 54-yarder. Despite Detroit accumulating 452 total yards, Carolina’s defense stiffened in key moments. The Lions turned the ball over on downs deep in Panthers territory with 7:04 remaining, and failed to move the chains on a final possession ending with another turnover on downs at the 2:06 mark.

Execution issues plagued Detroit late in the contest.

Injuries Impact Rosters Before Week 5 Matchups

Physical toll impacted both rosters during the primetime clash. Panthers rookie right tackle Monroe Freeling exited with a knee injury and did not return, while edge rusher Jaelan Phillips left due to a hamstring injury. For Detroit, cornerback Rock Ya-Sin departed with a hamstring injury and did not return.

The victory lifts the Panthers to a 2-2 record before they head into their Week 5 bye. Meanwhile, the 2-2 Lions look to rebound when they travel to face the Arizona Cardinals on October 11, while the Panthers prepare to take on the Philadelphia Eagles on October 18.
