Texas Rangers Beat Seattle Mariners to Extend AL West Division Lead

Power was precisely what the Texas clubhouse needed. Entering the contest, Seattle starter George Kirby had surrendered just 12 runs, including 11 earned, across 12 career starts spanning 74 1/3 innings against Texas. He had allowed only four home runs during that span.

That dominance dissolved over the first three frames. Three different hitters took Kirby deep for a total of four home runs, instantly doubling the career home-run total he had previously surrendered to the franchise. Pederson launched two long balls, while Duran and Burger each added solo shots as Texas cruised to a 7-3 win over Seattle.

A Clubhouse Transformation After a Rough Outlier Season

The offensive explosion came from a trio of hitters searching for bounce-back campaigns after difficult years in MLB.com. Pederson slashed just .181/.285/.328 with a .613 OPS and nine home runs across 96 games during his first season in Texas. Duran experienced a promising breakout in MLB.com by hitting .308/.344/.526 before the All-Star break while filling in for an injured Corey Seager, but he subsequently managed a .237/.278/.309 slash line with a 73 OPS+ over 182 games across 2024-25. Burger, recognized for his raw power, finished his first Texas campaign with a .688 OPS.

Manager Skip Schumaker pointed to the current form as a return to true baseline performance rather than a temporary hot streak. Schumaker added of Duran, He’s an everyday player.

The series victory was built on clutch hitting and gritty pitching performances from the opening bell. In the series opener, Burger delivered a pivotal two-run home run in the fourth inning off Bryce Miller to tie the game at 3-3, followed by a go-ahead single in the sixth off Eduard Bazardo that drove in Brandon Nimmo for a 5-4 victory. Peyton Gray earned a scoreless sixth, and Jacob Latz locked down his 20th save of the year in 22 opportunities despite allowing a run in the ninth.

That opening-night win moved the Rangers to 52-51 and created separation in the standings. Following Monday’s decisive 7-3 verdict, Texas finished 6-1 against Seattle at Globe Life Field this year, bringing their overall head-to-head record against the Mariners to 7-3 and securing a season-series victory for just the second time this decade.

Division Standing and the Upcoming Pre-Deadline Road Trip

With the three-game series victory secured, the Rangers stretched their lead in the division to 2 1/2 games over Seattle. But the club has little time to celebrate before embarking on a critical stretch away from home.

Texas now faces a demanding road trip just days before the August 3 Trade Deadline. The schedule features a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays, followed by three games against the Houston Astros.

“Every win matters, but I think the ones right before the Deadline, there’s always a little more stress or attention, especially in a situation where you could go either way. But I think we put ourselves in a good spot. We’ve got to continue to play like that.”

Pederson noted that while a long schedule remains, the team answered the call when it mattered most. The club will test its depth against elite competition while managing an injury list that includes players such as Wyatt Langford, Danny Jansen, and Jacob deGrom as the first half gives way to the second-half push.
