A 15-year-old student shot a teacher at a Texas high school Monday and then fatally shot himself, according to authorities. The shooting occurred at Hill Country College Preparatory High School in Bulverde, a city near San Antonio.

No other injuries were reported at the school. The teacher was taken to a nearby hospital, but her condition is currently unknown.

Comal County Sheriff Mark Reynolds stated, “What happened today is something no community ever wants to face, but we prepare for something that we hope never occurs.” Reynolds said investigators are working to understand the relationship between the student and the teacher and how the firearm was obtained.

The campus, which has roughly 250 students, was placed on lockdown shortly after 8:30 a.m. Students reported hearing loud bangs and screaming from a second-floor room. One student told KSAT that they heard five shots and yelling before being directed to a classroom by their debate teacher.

Students were bused to a nearby middle school for reunification with their parents, some of whom were praying while they waited. Reynolds confirmed that the shooter’s family members were also in the reunification line.

“We’re trying to collect as much information as we can from witnesses,” Reynolds said.

Jesse Lopez, a parent, expressed concern about his daughter’s return to school, stating, “For one, she has autism, and she’ll be afraid to go back, she’ll be real afraid to go back.”

Classes for Tuesday have been canceled, but counselors will be available for students and families, according to principal Julie Wiley. She stated, “Our hearts are with everyone impacted, especially that teacher, their family, and our school community. We know this has been a difficult day.”

Hill Country College Preparatory High School, part of the Comal Independent School District, focuses on college preparation with a STEAM-centered curriculum, including electives like cybersecurity and engineering. The school opened in August 2020 and currently serves grades nine through 12.
