“The game doesn’t end when you run out of time,” says Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, creative director of the title. According to the developers, the much-discussed “30 days and 30 nights to save your family” applies strictly to that specific quest. If the player does not reach Coen’s family in time, the story changes and the world moves forward, but the game remains playable.

Understanding Time as a Resource

The time system in The Blood of Dawnwalker functions more like a currency than a traditional ticking clock. Players begin the game with 480 “time dollars.” The 30 days and nights are represented by a bar divided into eight segments. Time only advances when a player completes an objective marked with an hourglass icon. Between these marked actions, players are free to explore the world as long as they wish without the clock progressing.

Consequences and Player Choice

The developers emphasize that letting the 30-day timer expire is not a “fail state.” Instead, it is an alternative path that leads to different content. “I really hope some people will play it and let time run out,” Tomaszkiewicz adds. “I think it’s very interesting, you get some content that you don’t get otherwise if you play this way.” While players might miss out on certain narrative beats by ignoring the countdown, they receive a unique experience that is shaped by their own decisions rather than a linear, pre-determined path.

Even after the 30-day period concludes, the game does not reach a forced termination. Players can continue to play, mopping up side quests, discovering secrets, and exploring the world. The developers note that the time system defines the journey, but it is not the complete story.

The Blood of Dawnwalker, developed by the Polish studio Rebel Wolves, is an open-world dark fantasy action RPG set in a supernatural 14th-century Europe. The game has officially gone “gold,” meaning it has reached a shippable state ahead of its September 3, 2026, launch on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
