The leader of South Korea’s main opposition Democratic Party, Lee Jae-myung, was stabbed on Tuesday during his visit to the southeastern coastal city of Busan.
Lee collapsed bleeding after being assaulted in the left side of the neck by an unidentified man during a question-and-answer session with reporters after he inspected the site of the new Gadeokdo Airport in Busan.
The injured person was transferred to Busan National University Hospital about 20 minutes after the attack, after the party leaders accompanying me on a visit to him provided first aid, including stopping the bleeding, while the perpetrator was arrested at the scene.
Eyewitnesses said that the suspect, who pretended to be one of Lee’s supporters, approached the opposition leader and asked for his autograph, then assaulted him with a weapon measuring 20-30 cm in length.
South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed his concern after the attack on the opposition leader, stressing that “Korean society should never tolerate this type of violence under any circumstances.”
