Homer’s The Odyssey, with roots as far back as 1600 BC, serves as an unexpected repository of ancient scientific knowledge.

Metallurgy and the Roots of Ancient Trade

While The Odyssey was written down during the Iron Age around 800 BC, it acts as a complex archive of late Bronze Age technology. Archaeological excavations at the Mycenaean Palace of Nestor near Pylos, Greece, have yielded physical evidence that mirrors the poem’s descriptions. According to archaeologist Sharon Stocker at the University of Cincinnati, the discovery of vessels crafted from bronze, silver, and gold—alongside fenestrated axes—helps validate specific Homeric narratives, including the famous archery challenge involving twelve axes.

The text also provides technical insights into metalworking. In one scene, the cooling of a spear in water is described with a sizzle, a detail that Michael Wright, a craftsman and ex-curator at the Science Museum in London, notes is consistent with the quenching of steel. Witnessed the preparation of a tool with a steel edge, Wright suggests of the passage’s author. Furthermore, the epic’s depiction of long-distance trade is supported by the 1980s discovery of a fourteenth-century BC shipwreck at Ulu Burun, Turkey, which contained luxury goods from Africa, Europe, and Mesopotamia.

Botanical Knowledge and Ancient Pharmacology

Homer’s work features a variety of plant-derived substances, ranging from the grief-banishing drug nepenthe to the transformative potions of Circe. Modern researchers are now identifying the potential real-world counterparts to these literary inventions. Rafael Molina-Venegas, a botanist at the Doñana Biological Station in Spain, explains that compounds like henbane and mandrake were likely known in the ancient world for their ability to block the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, functioning as anaesthetics or painkillers.

The poem also describes a protective herb called moly, given to Odysseus by Hermes. Molina-Venegas and colleague Rodrigo Verano propose that moly may refer to local flora, such as the sea daffodil (Pancratium spp.), which features the white flowers and dark bulbs described in the text and contains properties that could counteract the effects of henbane or mandrake.

Autonomous Ships and Colour Perception

Perhaps most striking to contemporary audiences is Homer’s description of Phaeacian ships. These vessels are depicted as autonomous entities that know every city, every fertile land and have no steersmen, operating with an instinctual awareness of their crew’s intentions. While these passages read like modern science fiction, they represent the earliest imaginings of autonomous ships guided by what sounds remarkably like artificial intelligence to modern readers.

The epic also sparked a long-standing debate regarding human sensory evolution. In the nineteenth century, British Prime Minister William Gladstone observed that Homer’s colour vocabulary was limited, focusing heavily on black, white, and limited uses of red and purple. This led to the theory that the Greeks’ eyes were less evolved than ours are. However, a 1886 article in Nature offered a more grounded interpretation: Homer was often really describing something’s luminosity rather than its colour, a stylistic choice that has often been misread as a biological deficiency.
