Universal Pictures’ The Odyssey has established itself as a significant commercial force. The film, which features an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and Zendaya, outperformed the global debut of Nolan’s 2023 film Oppenheimer, which finished with $965 million worldwide. According to Universal/Syncopy, the film’s $264 million global launch was roughly 46% higher than the $180.4 million global debut of Oppenheimer.

In North America, the film tallied $124.5 million. While this figure falls behind the openings of animated hits Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, it stands as the highest opening for a live-action film this year. The R-rated epic also outperformed the domestic opening of the 2017 horror film It, which earned $123.4 million. It is the fourth-highest R-rated opening ever, coming in just behind Deadpool 2’s $125.5 million. The film is also Nolan’s third-biggest opening of his career, trailing only the second and third films in his Batman trilogy.

The Odyssey is the first feature movie to be filmed entirely with Imax cameras. These heavy, loud cameras are designed to capture sharper, brighter, and higher-resolution content. The film’s reliance on these formats has led to extreme demand; screenings at the BFI Imax cinema in London were sold out for the opening weekend, with fans arriving as early as midnight and 4am to watch the film. In France, the Pathé Odysseum Montpellier—the country’s first theater with Imax 70mm capability—reported total sellouts in timing with the film’s release.

Market Performance and Future Competition

The film’s success has been bolstered by significant critical and audience acclaim. It holds a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, an A on CinemaScore, and an 81% definite recommend rating on PostTrak. The film has become the highest opening weekend ever for Nolan in 48 countries and for Universal in 11, including India, where the $7.2 million opening is the largest ever for a non-franchise Hollywood production.

Looking ahead, The Odyssey faces potential competition from Sony’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day. That film, which also stars Tom Holland and Zendaya, is set to be released in ten days. According to reports, Brand New Day also features Sadie Sink in the cast. Industry observers note that while Brand New Day could debut at number one in two weekends, Holland would hold the distinction of being in both films. Additionally, Zendaya and Robert Pattinson, both featured in The Odyssey, are set to appear in Dune 3.

Other films currently in the market have seen varied results. Disney’s Moana is struggling, remaining far from the $100 million mark. Meanwhile, the A24 film Death of Robin Hood, starring Hugh Jackman, struggled to find an audience, grossing only $6 million against a budget of over $20 million. Conversely, The Odyssey is expected to fill theaters through Labor Day, driven by both new customers and repeat viewers, with current metrics pointing toward a theatrical run capable of clearing $1 billion worldwide.

Demographic data from the opening weekend shows that men made up 56% of the general audience, with more than three-quarters of ticket buyers older than 25. Half of the film’s total audience were aged between 18 and 34. Universal Pictures had initially projected a $100 million opening weekend in North America, a target the film ultimately exceeded.
