In May 2016, Tina Dabi, a Delhi-based student, achieved the top rank in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination at the age of 22, marking her success in her first attempt. Dabi’s accomplishment was particularly significant as she became the first Dalit woman to top the prestigious civil services examination.
A Childhood Shaped by Education
Tina Dabi was born on November 9, 1993, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. Her family relocated to Delhi in 2005, where she spent her formative years. Both her parents were engineers; her father, Jaswant Dabi, worked in the Indian Telecom Service, and her mother, Himani Dabi, was an officer in the Indian Engineering Services. She attended the Convent of Jesus and Mary in Delhi, consistently excelling academically.
The Decision to Attempt UPSC
Dabi decided to pursue the civil services exam while still in college. She graduated from Lady Shri Ram College for Women (LSR), Delhi University, with a degree in political science, which she also chose as her optional subject for the UPSC examination. She cleared the exam on her first attempt, a remarkable feat considering the exam’s vast syllabus and low success rate. Each year, only a few hundred candidates out of hundreds of thousands who apply ultimately enter the Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
A Moment That Sparked National Conversation
Dabi’s success garnered significant media attention, sparking conversations about caste and opportunity. As a Dalit woman achieving the top rank, her accomplishment challenged existing stereotypes regarding merit and social mobility. She noted that, following the results, some media outlets focused on her caste rather than her preparation.
From Topper to Administrator
After clearing the exam, Dabi joined the 2016 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and was assigned to the Rajasthan cadre. She received the Director’s Gold Medal during her training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration in Mussoorie. Her first posting in 2017 was as an assistant collector in Ajmer, Rajasthan. Over the years, she has held several administrative roles in the state, focusing on governance and development initiatives. She later served as district collector in Jaisalmer and is currently posted as collector and district magistrate of Barmer in Rajasthan.
More Than an Exam Result
Dabi’s story extends beyond her exam result, representing the potential for education to transform lives. At 22, she had overcome a significant academic barrier, serving as an inspiration to UPSC aspirants across India.
