Tips for a successful start

Every beginning is difficult – even in a gym? Every recreational athlete sooner or later visits the gym for the first time. People who are active in sports shouldn’t worry about this.
However, the following tips make it easier to get started in everyday gym life and ensure that recreational athletes feel completely comfortable from the very first moment.

First tip: items for your sports bag

Ideally, gym-goers pack their bags the day before to make sure they don’t forget anything. A must-have is, among other things, a wristband or membership card to gain access to the fitness club.

The right sportswear should not only be comfortable and breathable.

Even more important is to simply feel comfortable in the sports outfit. A water bottle is just as important as small and large towels, which are required for the training session and for showering afterwards. If you want to shower at the gym, don’t forget a change of clothes and flip-flops.

Second tip: Details about your first visit to the gym

Most gyms have a reception where members do some sort of check-in. If you would like to do a free trial training instead, you should of course let the reception know. The team then introduces the fitness club and advises on suitable membership offers.

Coaches for gym beginners often take enough time to advise new members and ensure they get the best start to training. Experienced fitness coaches will be happy to answer any questions you may have about how physically active people can achieve their own goals and integrate training sustainably into their own everyday lives. Trainers and members advise how the workouts can be adapted to individual goals and ideas.

Third tip: Benefits of courses

In a course, a fitness coach gives the training. Many participants particularly enjoy training together with other club members.

The first course dates may be a bit strenuous. But that usually changes quite quickly.

If you can’t decide on the right course at the beginning, you should try out several offers. Some of the courses are also divided into different levels of difficulty. Sports courses such as Pilates, back fitness or to strengthen the stomach, legs and buttocks are very popular. In some fitness clubs it is also possible to take part in yoga classes.

Fourth tip: Are there club rules?

When going to the gym, it is also important to be considerate of one another and behave respectfully towards those around you. That’s why it makes sense to always use a towel on all equipment and mats.
This means that the sports equipment not only stays clean. At the same time, it is ensured that no sweat remains on it. It is also considerate to put away mobile sports equipment such as weights and dumbbells after workouts. In this way, everyone involved ensures that things are always kept in order with just a few simple steps. In addition, recreational athletes should always drink enough in the gym.

Fifth tip: Training during off-peak times

Newcomers are well advised to train outside of peak hours. Newcomers to sport without a proper workout routine should, if possible, use off-peak times to get to know the fitness club in peace.

Ideally, sporty fitness club beginners should arrange to train in the morning or late in the evening.

The fitness studios are particularly busy immediately after work from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Beginners should therefore avoid these times for their first trial lessons in the fitness club.

Sixth tip: 100 percent focus on training

The gym is a place to meet like-minded people. That’s why it’s usually only a matter of time before amateur athletes exchange ideas with other members or make their first contacts.

Nevertheless, it is important to focus on your own fitness goals and not to be too distracted by a variety of new impressions. It is equally important not to allow yourself to be distracted by people with a significantly higher level of fitness. Don’t let yourself be put under pressure and instead focus on your own sporting progress.
If you want, you can record your own training results in writing at any time. This means that amateur athletes notice how their own fitness and condition improves over time.
