Singapore authorities have intercepted attempts to smuggle heroin, Ice, and cannabis into the country, hidden within pet food and beverage packaging. Two Malaysian men have been arrested in connection with the cases.
Drug Smuggling Attempts Foiled at Woodlands Checkpoint
Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officers at Woodlands Checkpoint discovered controlled substances hidden in a Malaysia-registered car on December 29. Further investigation by the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) revealed 20 bundles containing 1,462 grams of heroin and 1,442 grams of Ice concealed within pet food and beverage packaging.
In a separate incident on December 22, ICA officers searched another Malaysia-registered car at Woodlands Checkpoint and found two black bundles in a passenger’s bag suspected of containing drugs. CNB officers subsequently discovered seven bundles containing 3,272 grams of cannabis and 1,709 grams of Ice.
A 20-year-old and a 39-year-old Malaysian man were arrested in connection with both cases. The seized drugs and the suspects have been handed over to the CNB for further investigation.
Those convicted of trafficking more than 15 grams of pure heroin, more than 250 grams of Ice, or more than 500 grams of cannabis may face the death penalty under Singaporean law.
