A tropical low is forecast to approach the upper North Island in the coming days, bringing with it the potential for heavy rain and strong winds. Watches are in effect for several areas, and officials are advising caution.

Tropical Low to Bring Wet, Windy Weather to North Island

A strong wind watch is in place for the Far North from midday. A heavy rain watch will be in effect for the Coromandel Peninsula and western Bay of Plenty starting Thursday evening.

Civil Defence Northland is urging motorists to drive carefully and prepare for possible power outages.

A front moving onto Fiordland from the Tasman Sea is also under a heavy rain watch from Thursday evening into Friday.

Meteorologist Mmathapelo Makgabutlane told 1News the heaviest rain is currently expected to stay offshore, with wind being the primary concern. “We’re going to keep a very close eye on it as it approaches us,” she said.

The tropical air mass associated with the system is expected to bring warm and humid nights to northern areas, with overnight lows in the high teens and even the early 20s for Northland, Auckland, and parts of Waikato.

“That’s largely due to the warmer air mass and cloud cover,” Makgabutlane said. “It will definitely feel quite humid over the next few days, including overnight.”

Daytime temperatures are expected to remain typical for this time of year, generally in the mid to high 20s across much of the North Island.

Friday may bring thunderstorms and localized downpours to the upper North Island, making for an “active couple of days,” according to Makgabutlane. She advises people to stay updated with the latest forecasts throughout the week.
