US President Donald Trump has announced an indefinite extension of the Iran ceasefire to allow for further peace talks, although it remains unclear if Iran or the US ally, Israel, will agree to the terms.
- The ceasefire extension follows a request from Pakistani mediators to allow for a unified proposal from Iranian leadership.
- The US Navy will maintain its blockade of Iranian sea trade, a move Iran considers an act of war.
- More than 5,000 civilians have been killed across the region since the conflict began on February 28.
In a social media statement, Mr. Trump said the US agreed to a request by Pakistani mediators to halt attacks on Iran until representatives can reach a unified proposal and conclude discussions.
Despite the extension, Mr. Trump stated that the US Navy’s blockade of Iranian trade by sea will continue. This persists even as he pulled back from previous threats to bomb Iranian bridges and power plants.
Iranian Skepticism and Global Reaction
Initial reactions from Tehran suggest the announcement is being treated with skepticism. The Tasnim News Agency, affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, stated that Iran had not requested a ceasefire extension and repeated threats to break the US blockade by force.
An adviser to Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, the speaker of parliament and lead negotiator for Iran, suggested the announcement carried little weight and may be a ploy.
United Nations Secretary General António Guterres has condemned previous threats to target civilian infrastructure, noting that such attacks are forbidden under international humanitarian law.
Economic Impact and Conflict History
The war began on February 28 with aerial bombardments of Iran by the US and Israel. The conflict later expanded to Lebanon and Gulf states hosting US military bases after the Iran-allied group Hezbollah joined the fighting.
The violence has resulted in the virtual closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy chokepoint between Iran and Oman. This has caused oil prices to soar and raised concerns of a global recession.
Following the announcement, US stock futures rose and oil prices turned lower, though the dollar remained wavering.
Israel-Lebanon Diplomatic Efforts
On a separate front, a State Department official confirmed that Israel and Lebanon will hold fresh talks in Washington tomorrow. The two nations, which share no diplomatic relations, agreed to a separate ten-day ceasefire on Friday that included Hezbollah.
However, sporadic violence persists. The Israeli army recently reported striking a rocket launcher after Hezbollah targeted troops in Lebanon. Hezbollah claimed it launched attacks on northern Israel in retaliation for ceasefire violations.
A Lebanese government body reports that Israeli attacks have killed at least 2,454 people since the start of the war.
