Several U.S. politicians have expressed alarm and questioned President Donald Trump’s mental state following his issuance of an expletive-laden threat to Iran, warning them to “open the fuckin’ strait [of Hormuz], you crazy bastards” and threatening further attacks on the country’s infrastructure.
Trump’s Threat and Escalating Tensions
Trump made the statement on his Truth Social platform, writing: “Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!! Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH! Praise be to Allah. President DONALD J. TRUMP.” The statement comes as the Trump administration approaches a self-imposed deadline – Tuesday evening – for Iran to reopen the strait of Hormuz.
The strait, a critical shipping lane for oil and gas, has been effectively shut since the U.S. and Israel launched a war on Iran at the end of February, causing global oil prices to reach record highs. Trump has repeatedly threatened Tehran with deadlines in an attempt to reopen the corridor.
Criticism from Allies and Opponents
Marjorie Taylor Greene, a former Trump ally now critical of the president, called on those in the Trump administration who identify as Christian to “beg forgiveness from God” and intervene in what she described as the president’s “madness.” Greene stated on X that Trump has “gone insane” and that she is not defending Iran but believes the conflict stems from “the same nuclear lies” used for decades.
Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer described Trump’s rant as resembling that of “an unhinged madman,” and Bernie Sanders called it “dangerous and mentally unbalanced.” Senator Chris Murphy also labeled the statements “completely unhinged,” suggesting invoking the 25th amendment to declare the president unfit for office.
International Response and Ongoing Conflict
Mehdi Tabatabaei, deputy for communications at the Iranian president’s office, stated Sunday that Iran would only reopen the strait after receiving compensation for war damages through a “new legal regime” based on transit fees. He accused Trump of resorting to “obscenities and nonsense out of sheer desperation and anger.”
The war has resulted in more than 3,500 deaths across the region, including over 1,200 in Lebanon due to Israeli bombardment and partial occupation, and has displaced more than 4 million people across Iran and Lebanon.
Trump’s threats follow a U.S. military strike on the largest bridge in Iran last Thursday, which killed at least eight people and injured 95. The incident occurred after an intense 48-hour rescue operation for two U.S. pilots inside Iran, one of whom Trump said was “seriously wounded.”
Jake Auchincloss, a Democratic representative and Marine Corps veteran, suggested Iran views control over the strait as more strategically vital than developing a nuclear weapon. He added that, strategically, the war has been a failure.
