President Trump’s approach to the conflict with Iran appears to be evolving, with a recent Truth Social post omitting previous calls for regime change. The U.S. is weighing options that could allow Iran’s current leadership to remain in power, even as troop deployments to the Middle East continue.
Trump Administration Considers Multiple Outcomes in Iran Conflict
Trump’s latest statements contrast with earlier demands for “unconditional surrender” from Iran. A potential resolution could see the U.S. concluding its operation with Iran’s current anti-American leadership still in power, its oil exports continuing, and its control over the Strait of Hormuz intact.
Alternatively, the U.S. could escalate the conflict with the deployment of ground forces. A Marine expeditionary unit of approximately 2,500 combat soldiers, along with supporting ships and aircraft, recently departed Japan and is expected to arrive in the Middle East in the coming days. Another Marine force of similar size has left California, with an expected arrival in mid-April.
Military analysts suggest a possible U.S. target could be Kharg Island, a 3-sq-km (8-sq-mile) island containing Iran’s primary oil export terminal. Capturing the island could disrupt Iran’s oil shipments and potentially force concessions from the Iranian government.
While Trump stated he isn’t sending ground troops to Iran, he added, “If I were, I certainly wouldn’t tell you.”
Iran’s state media responded to the possibility of an attack on Kharg Island by warning that it would lead to “insecurity” in the Red Sea and “set fire” to energy facilities throughout the region.
The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to request $200 billion (£150 billion) in emergency funding from Congress for the ongoing military operation. This request suggests the White House is preparing for a prolonged and costly conflict.
Initial reactions from Congress, including from Republican allies, have been cautious. Republican Congressman Chip Roy of Texas stated that more briefing and explanation are needed regarding the mission and its funding.
The situation remains fluid, and the ultimate direction of the conflict is currently uncertain.
