Donald Trump has stated the United States no longer needs NATO, following rebuffs from several member countries regarding his proposal for a multinational naval force to reopen the Strait of Hormuz trade route, which Iran has closed.
Trump Dismisses NATO Assistance
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump described the rejection of his calls as a “very foolish mistake,” claiming, without providing evidence, that “Everyone agrees with us, but they don’t want to help. And we, you know, we as the United States have to remember that because we think it’s pretty shocking.” He added that he believed European nations would have provided minesweepers for the operation, characterizing the situation as “not a big deal” but “unfair” to the US.
Trump also criticized British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, expressing disappointment and noting a perceived decline in the relationship between the US and the UK since Starmer took office.
The US president’s remarks followed Starmer’s statement on Monday that the UK would “be taking the necessary action to defend ourselves and our allies, we will not be drawn into the wider war.” British government sources confirmed there were no plans to deploy UK ships to the strait.
Escalating Middle East Crisis
Several US allies have questioned Trump’s rationale and the necessity of the US-Israeli actions against Iran, now in its third week. Trump also criticized Japan, Australia, and South Korea for declining to send warships, stating, “Because of the fact that we have had such Military Success, we no longer ‘need,’ or desire, the Nato Countries’ assistance _ WE NEVER DID!”
The situation unfolds amidst an escalating crisis in the Middle East, where Iran has been attacking cargo vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, halting oil shipments from the Gulf and driving up global oil prices. A typical day sees ships carrying about a fifth of the world’s oil travel through the strait, but Iran has vowed to prevent “even a single litre” from reaching its adversaries. Oil prices have surpassed $100 per barrel, threatening global inflation.
Potential for Wider Conflict
When asked about the possibility of ground operations by American or Israeli forces, potentially targeting the Kharg Island oil port complex or facilities in Isfahan, Trump stated, “I’m really not afraid of that. I’m really not afraid of anything,” dismissing concerns about a prolonged conflict similar to the Vietnam War.
Reuters reported the White House is encouraging Syria’s Ahmed al-Sharaa regime to disarm Hezbollah in eastern Lebanon, a move that could lead to conflict with Sunni former Salafists from the al-Nusra Front.
Trump’s messaging has been inconsistent throughout the war, refusing to commit to a timeline while simultaneously touting military successes. “Look, if we left right now it would take 10 years for them to rebuild,” he said. “We’re not ready to leave yet, but we’ll be leaving in the near future.”
The Washington Post reported that senior Israeli officials informed US diplomats that Iranian protesters would “get slaughtered” if they took to the streets, despite Israel’s public calls for an uprising.
Recent Attacks
Fresh attacks across the Gulf were launched by Iran on Tuesday, expanding the conflict beyond its initial fronts. Qatar intercepted a missile, with falling debris causing a fire but no casualties. The United Arab Emirates temporarily closed its airspace in response to missile and drone threats before stabilizing the situation. In Iraq, attacks reportedly targeted the US embassy in Baghdad, and a separate strike killed four people at a house believed to host Iranian advisors.
Explosions were also reported in multiple Iranian cities, including Tehran, Ahvaz, Isfahan, and Shiraz. Iraq’s oil minister announced an agreement with Tehran to allow tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump also praised the reported death of Ali Larijani, the secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council, in an Israeli strike, referencing his alleged role in suppressing mass protests. “Their leaders are gone,” Trump said. “A lot of people say their actual top was killed yesterday, along with somebody else who was responsible for the killing 32,000 – he was in charge of the killing of protesters.” He described Iran’s clerical regime as “an evil group” and claimed they had killed more than 32,000 people, with the individual responsible for those deaths also reportedly killed.
