U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Friday that the U.S. will only sign a deal with Iran that involves “unconditional surrender” from the Iranian regime.
Trump’s Conditions for a Deal
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said that following Iran’s surrender and “the selection of a GREAT & ACCEPTABLE Leader(s),” the U.S. and its allies would work to rebuild Iran economically. He added, “IRAN WILL HAVE A GREAT FUTURE. ‘MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN (MIGA!).’”
Trump has previously expressed a desire to be involved in the selection of Iran’s next leader, stating a preference for “someone that will bring harmony and peace to Iran.”
International Reactions
Israel’s defence minister, Israel Katz, said this week that Iran’s next supreme leader would be a target for elimination if they continued to threaten Israel, the U.S., and others.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said “some countries” had begun mediating, though he did not name them. He stated, “Let’s be clear: we are committed to lasting peace in the region yet we have no hesitation in defending our nation’s dignity & sovereignty.”
Israeli warplanes struck Beirut and Tehran on Friday as Iran launched retaliatory strikes against Israel and Gulf countries hosting U.S. forces.
The death toll continues to rise, with at least 1,230 people killed in Iran, more than 120 in Lebanon, and around a dozen in Israel, according to The Associated Press. Six U.S. troops have also been killed.
