Details of the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner Attack Suspect
Law enforcement identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen of California. While official background details are limited, social media postings suggest Allen worked as a teacher in Torrance, near Los Angeles.
Washington interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll stated that Allen, believed to have been a guest at the hotel, was apprehended after firing at a checkpoint. He was taken to a local hospital for evaluation, though officials have not yet determined his motivation.
Chaos and Evacuation in the Ballroom
The incident occurred around 8:35 p.m., triggering panic among the 2,600 attendees in the hotel’s ballroom. Guests in formal attire took cover under tables as security personnel drew weapons and formed a protective cordon.
Security forces in combat fatigues stormed the stage to evacuate President Trump, Melania Trump, and Vice-President J.D. Vance. Cabinet members, including the Defence Secretary and Secretary of State, were escorted out by their respective security details.
President Trump later shared closed-circuit TV footage on Truth Social showing the suspect running through a security checkpoint. Trump described the gunman as a “lone wolf” who charged from 50 yards away.
Security Concerns and History of Attacks
The investigation is currently focused on how the gunman smuggled a shotgun into the high-security event. The Washington Hilton was previously the site of an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
President Trump stated he believed he was the target of the attack. This marks the third attempt on his life since 2024, following a shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, and an incident involving a gunman at his golf club in West Palm Beach, Florida.
International Response
World leaders quickly condemned the violence. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that any attack on democratic institutions or the freedom of the press must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.
French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed his support for Donald Trump, calling the armed attack “unacceptable” and asserting that violence has no place in a democracy.
