Federal authorities have charged a California man with the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump after he tried to breach security at a high-profile press gala in Washington, DC.
- Suspect: Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California.
- Incident: Attempted security breach at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner.
- Outcome: A Secret Service agent was shot in the chest but survived due to a ballistic vest.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Cole Tomas Allen faces a three-count complaint including the attempted assassination of the president and firearms charges. If convicted, the attempted assassination charge carries a potential sentence of up to life in prison.
During his first appearance in federal court, Allen, who holds a master’s degree in computer science, stated he would answer all questions truthfully. US Magistrate Judge Matthew Sharbaugh ordered Allen to be detained, with a follow-up hearing scheduled for Thursday.
US Attorney Jeanine Pirro stated that further charges may be filed as the investigation continues. Pirro characterized the event as a clear attempt to “bring down as many of the high-ranking cabinet officials” as possible.
Details of the Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump
The incident occurred during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner at the Washington Hilton hotel. Authorities say Allen traveled via train from Los Angeles to Chicago, and finally to Washington, arriving on April 24.
According to Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, Allen approached a security checkpoint on the hotel’s terrace level, one floor above the ballroom where the president was located.
Blanche stated that Allen ran through a magnetometer while holding a long gun. A Secret Service officer was shot in the chest but was protected by a ballistic vest. The officer returned fire five times, and Allen was promptly arrested.
Investigation and Evidence
Prosecutors cited an alleged manifesto written by Allen, which listed administration officials as targets “prioritised from highest-ranking to lowest.”
Authorities recovered a semiautomatic pistol, a shotgun, and three knives. Investigators believe the firearms were purchased in California.
Political Reaction
The event marks the third assassination attempt against Donald Trump since 2024. The White House has responded by accusing Democratic rivals of inspiring political violence through their rhetoric.
White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt told reporters that “deranged lies and smears” have inspired individuals to commit violence. Leavitt added that the president does not view the incident as a security failure, noting that the perpetrator was “immediately neutralised.”
