Trump Targeted: White House Correspondents’ Dinner Shooting

A suspect targeting President Donald Trump and administration officials fired a shotgun at a Secret Service agent during the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in Washington on April 26.

  • Suspect: Cole Tomas Allen, a 31-year-old California resident and teacher from Torrance.
  • Charges: Assault of a federal officer, discharging a firearm, and attempting to kill a federal officer.
  • Outcome: A Secret Service officer was injured but saved by a bulletproof vest; the suspect was tackled and arrested.

Chaos at the Washington Hilton

The gunman opened fire at a security checkpoint in the Washington Hilton hotel before being tackled and arrested. President Trump and first lady Melania Trump were immediately rushed out of the event.

Video footage released by the President shows the suspect running rapidly through a security checkpoint, catching personnel off-guard. No shots were fired at the gunman, who managed to pass through two checkpoints before being brought down.

Inside the ballroom, the noise of gunshots triggered panic among 2,600 attendees. Guests in tuxedos and ball gowns took cover under tables as security personnel in combat fatigues formed a protective cordon and evacuated President Trump, Melania Trump, and Vice-President J.D. Vance.

Details of the Suspect

Law enforcement identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen. He was reportedly a guest at the hotel and was found to be armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives.

Investigations suggest Allen traveled by train from Los Angeles to Chicago and then to Washington. He will be charged in federal court on April 27.

Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the suspect set out to target administration officials, including the President. Officials believe Allen acted as a “lone wolf,” though investigations continue regarding potential motivations.

Security Concerns and Global Response

The incident has raised questions regarding how the suspect smuggled a shotgun into the hotel for a high-profile event attended by the President’s cabinet. This was the first time President Trump attended the dinner as president.

The Washington Hilton was also the site of an assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan in 1981. The current event echoes other recent security breaches, including a 2024 shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, and an incident at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

International leaders condemned the attack, with NATO leader Mark Rutte calling it an attack on “free and open societies.” The British embassy indicated that the incident may affect planning for King Charles’ visit to Washington starting April 27.

The injured Secret Service officer has been released from the hospital and is reported to be in good shape.
