Donald Trump has called on the United Kingdom and other nations to deploy warships to the strait of Hormuz amid ongoing conflict with Iran. The former U.S. president urged the deployment of vessels to ensure the key trading route remains open and safe.
Strait of Hormuz Conflict and Oil Supply
The strait of Hormuz is a critical waterway connecting the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman, facilitating the passage of approximately 20 million barrels of oil daily – roughly a fifth of the world’s oil supply. Recent attacks on ships traveling through the strait, following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran a fortnight ago, have effectively closed the passage, driving up oil prices and creating pressure on the global economy.
In a post on his Truth Social platform Saturday, Trump stated, “Many Countries, especially those who are affected by Iran’s attempted closure of the Hormuz Strait, will be sending War Ships, in conjunction with the United States of America, to keep the Strait open and safe.”
Trump claimed the U.S. has “already destroyed 100% of Iran’s Military capability,” but acknowledged the potential for continued disruption through drones, mines, or missiles. He called on China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and other affected nations to contribute vessels to the area, describing Iran as a “Nation that has been totally decapitated.”
He further stated the U.S. will “be bombing the hell out of the shoreline, and continually shooting Iranian Boats and Ships out of the water,” vowing to reopen the strait.
Iran responded to Trump’s claims by dismissing assertions that its military capabilities had been destroyed as “fabricated lies.”
A Ministry of Defence spokesperson stated that the UK is “currently discussing with our allies and partners a range of options to ensure the security of shipping in the region.”
Previous Comments on UK Involvement
Trump’s recent plea to the UK contrasts with previous comments made on the same social media platform, where he accused Prime Minister Keir Starmer of attempting to join the conflict after claiming victory. He stated, “The United Kingdom, our once Great Ally, maybe the Greatest of them all, is finally giving serious thought to sending two aircraft carriers to the Middle East.” Trump added, “That’s OK, Prime Minister Starmer, we don’t need them any longer – But we will remember. We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!”
The UK did not participate in the initial strikes on Iran, which resulted in the death of its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Starmer has defended his decision not to directly involve the UK in the military campaign, stating it is his “duty to judge what is in Britain’s national interest.”
Downing Street has been approached for comment.
