Trump Warns Iran: US Citizens Urged to Leave Middle East

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said he anticipates the Trump administration will provide a legal justification for recent strikes against Iran during a meeting with congressional leaders this afternoon, asserting the administration did not require congressional approval for the operation.

Legal Justification Expected

“I suspect they’ll have good legal justification for it,” Thune said. He argued that the administration’s actions align with those of previous administrations responding to perceived national security threats, citing examples from the presidencies of George H.W. Bush and Barack Obama.

The administration, according to Thune, determined that “the ballistic missile threat that the Iranians possess is something that threatened our troops in the region, and obviously our allies in the region as well.”

Potential for Further Action

While Thune does not foresee the deployment of U.S. ground troops at this time, he did not rule out the possibility as the conflict evolves. “I don’t see that happening, but … again, I’m not prepared at this point to say what is and what isn’t out,” he said.

Future of Iran

Thune stated that the future governance of Iran is largely in the hands of the Iranian people, noting the current leadership has been “essentially been taken out.” He suggested this presents a “unique opportunity and moment in history” for Iran to choose a path toward democracy and international partnership.

“I don’t think that’s probably our place to go in and figure out what that is,” he added.
