Trump’s Wine War: 200% Tariff Threat to France

U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday threatened tariffs on French wines and champagne following reports that French President Emmanuel Macron is unwilling to join Trumpโ€™s โ€œBoard of Peaceโ€ focused on Gaza. Trump also reiterated his plans to control Greenland, suggesting minimal resistance from European nations.

Trump Threatens Tariffs Over Gaza Peace Board

When questioned about Macronโ€™s position in Miami, Trump dismissed the French leaderโ€™s influence and stated he would impose a 200% tariff on French wines and champagnes as leverage. โ€œWell, nobody wants him because heโ€™s going to be out of office very soon,โ€ Trump said. โ€œSo you know, that’s all right. What I’ll do is, if they feel like [being] hostile, I’ll put a 200% tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join. But he doesn’t have to join.โ€

Macronโ€™s five-year presidential term ends in May 2027, and French law prevents him from seeking a third term.

The Board of Peace, endorsed by the United Nations Security Council in November, was established to oversee the Israel-Hamas ceasefire. Invitations to join the board have been extended to various world leaders, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Renewed Push for Greenland Control

Trump also reaffirmed his intention to control Greenland, downplaying potential opposition from Europe. โ€œI don’t think they’re going to push back too much,โ€ he said. โ€œWe have to have it …They can’t protect it.โ€

He referenced Denmarkโ€™s historical claims to Greenland, characterizing Danish leaders as โ€œvery good peopleโ€ but arguing that a centuries-old presence does not establish ownership. โ€œ[Just] because the boat went there 500 years ago and then left, that doesn’t give you title to property,โ€ Trump stated, though the specific โ€œboatโ€ he referred to was unclear.

Denmark has maintained colonies in Greenland since 1721, and the island became part of Denmark in 1953. In 2009, Denmark granted Greenland self-government, giving the territory control over all affairs except foreign policy and defense.

Trump previously threatened to take control of Greenland โ€œwhether they [European lawmakers] like it or not,โ€ citing โ€œworld securityโ€ as justification. He also warned of tariffs up to 25% on eight European countries, including the UK, until the U.S. controls Greenland. While not ruling out military force, Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly indicated on Jan. 6 that Trump would prefer to purchase Greenland.

European states are currently considering retaliatory tariffs and other economic counter-measures in response to Trumpโ€™s threats.
