Protesters have raised concerns regarding the use of RAF Lakenheath by U.S. military aircraft, calling for greater accountability from the base. The Lakenheath Alliance for Peace reported observing a significant number of U.S. fighter bombers departing the base in recent weeks.
RAF Lakenheath and U.S. Aircraft Departures
Peter Lux, organiser for the Lakenheath Alliance for Peace, stated that RAF bases should be held “accountable” for allowing U.S. planes to take off. He reported that protesters observed between 116 and 118 U.S. fighter bombers departing the base in recent weeks.
Lux emphasized the base’s status as sovereign territory, asserting that “Britain is actually legally liable for what happens at that base.”
A six-day peace camp, including an around-the-clock vigil outside the base gates, concluded on April 6. During the camp, protesters prepared a letter outlining their concerns for the Lakenheath base commanders.
Lux connected the issue to broader international concerns, stating, “I think we need the accountability of those bases, particularly with what’s going on in Iran, which the British government have said they’re not happy about because of international law.”
