Two U.S. troops killed, one missing in Iranian missile attack on Jordan

Two U.S. service members were killed and one remains missing following an Iranian ballistic missile and drone attack on an airbase in Jordan on Friday, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). The attack, which occurred on July 17, marks the first time U.S. troops have been killed since fighting resumed two weeks ago. This incident brings the total number of U.S. service members killed in the conflict to 16.

Details of the Attack and Casualties

CENTCOM reported that the casualties occurred as U.S. and partner forces were defending against a coordinated barrage of Iranian ballistic missiles and attack drones. In addition to the two fatalities and the one missing service member, four other American personnel were medically evacuated to hospitals in Jordan. Those troops have since been discharged, and other personnel who sustained minor injuries have returned to duty. CENTCOM stated it is withholding the identities of the deceased service members until 24 hours after their next of kin have been notified. An official investigation into the incident is currently underway.

Iranian Claims and Regional Context

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement on Friday claiming responsibility for the operation, which they termed the 14th wave of Operation Nasr-2. The IRGC alleged that the strike was retaliation for U.S. attacks launched from bases in Jordan against civilian targets in southern Iran, including residential areas and infrastructure in Bandar Abbas. In its statement, the IRGC claimed to have targeted U.S. fighter jets and aerial refueling aircraft stationed at a Jordanian airbase. They asserted that the strike resulted in the destruction of several refueling aircraft and fighter jets, while causing “serious damage” to many others. Additionally, Iranian state media reported an attack on a U.S. special operations command center at Al-Tanf in Syria. However, the U.S. military previously confirmed it completed a withdrawal from the Al-Tanf base earlier this year.

Escalating Regional Tensions

The Friday attack in Jordan is part of a broader escalation of hostilities across the Middle East. The current violence follows a week-long U.S. bombing campaign on Iran that began on July 7, which was initiated after Iranian forces attacked tankers in the Gulf. The situation is further complicated by Iran’s ongoing efforts to supply Hezbollah via corridors in Iraq and Syria. While the new government in Syria has attempted to curb smuggling activities, Iran continues to exert influence through various militias. The region has seen a series of recent provocations:

  • Erbil, Iraq: Coalition forces shot down eight explosive-laden drones over the city on Friday.
  • Kuwait: An Iranian attack caused damage and fires at a power generation and water desalination station.
  • Jordan: Military forces intercepted three incoming Iranian missiles.

As the conflict intensifies, the U.S. military remains on high alert. The incident in Jordan underscores the growing threat posed by Tehran’s missile and drone capabilities as the U.S. military continues to operate in a volatile, multi-front environment.
