The United Arab Emirates and China reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership during a visit by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi to the UAE on December 12th and 13th. Discussions focused on bilateral relations, mutual interests, and regional and global issues, including the conflict in Gaza and the situation in Palestine.
Strengthening Bilateral Ties
During the visit, both sides agreed to implement understandings reached during UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to China in May 2024, aiming to elevate their relationship at all levels. China expressed firm support for the UAE’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity.
The UAE reaffirmed its commitment to the One China principle, recognizing Taiwan as an integral part of China and opposing external interference in China’s internal affairs. China also voiced support for the UAE’s efforts to resolve the dispute over the Greater Tunb, Lesser Tunb, and Abu Musa islands through bilateral negotiations and international law.
Economic and Development Cooperation
Both nations expressed a desire to deepen alignment between China’s Belt and Road Initiative and the UAE’s “We the UAE 2031” Vision and “Projects of the 50.” They also highlighted the importance of cooperation in areas such as economy, trade, investment, energy, infrastructure, technology, and research.
The UAE praised the outcomes of the Fourth Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, anticipating its positive impact on global cooperation. The UAE also expressed appreciation for China’s Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative, and Global Governance Initiative, with China extending an invitation for UAE participation.
Regional and Global Issues
Both countries reiterated their commitment to a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, advocating for an independent Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders. They also expressed support for international efforts to achieve a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and alleviate humanitarian suffering.
China commended the UAE’s role in the region, while the UAE acknowledged China’s contributions to peace and stability in the Middle East and globally. Both sides agreed to enhance communication and coordination within the United Nations, BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, and other multilateral platforms.
The UAE expressed support for China hosting the second China–Arab States Summit and the second GCC-China Summit for Cooperation and Development in 2026, and affirmed its readiness to work towards the conclusion of a China–GCC free trade agreement. Cooperation in military affairs, law enforcement, combating extremism and terrorism, and cultural exchange were also emphasized.
