Closing schools stands as one of the most difficult decisions during an infectious disease outbreak according to researchers from UMC Utrecht. While halting in-person attendance helps suppress viral spread, it carries severe social and educational costs for children. To understand how these interventions actually altered the trajectory of COVID-19, investigators from UMC Utrecht, the University of Lisbon, and Tilburg University developed a mathematical model to reconstruct how SARS-CoV-2 spread through the Netherlands, tracking elementary and secondary schools throughout the pandemic.
By combining epidemiological data with transmission modeling, they were able to evaluate how different school closure and reopening strategies influenced the course of the pandemic.
