The United Nations chief and several international bodies have condemned new Israeli legislation that restricts the operations of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) and cuts off essential services to its facilities in Gaza.
Israeli Restrictions on UNRWA Operations
The Knesset, Israel’s parliament, recently passed a law blocking the provision of electricity and water to UNRWA facilities, according to reports. Additionally, Israel has stripped UNRWA of its diplomatic immunity.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the amendments, calling them “outrageous and illegal.” UNRWA itself has also criticized the actions, stating they are impacting its ability to provide critical aid to Palestinian refugees.
The measures have raised concerns about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where UNRWA provides essential services, including healthcare, education, and social support, to a large population of Palestinian refugees. The agency has stated the cuts impact communications as well.
