Singapore’s Minister for Home Affairs and Coordinating Minister for National Security K. Shanmugam has urged the public to consider the difficulties involved in animal rescue and shelter operations before offering criticism.
Animal Welfare Challenges in Singapore
The comments come after recent reports regarding the Animal Lovers League (ALL) losing its tenancy at The Animal Lodge due to being over 50 months behind in rental arrears, concerns about veterinary care for the animals, and an investigation by the Commissioner of Charities.
Mr. Shanmugam, who has known ALL co-founder Mohan Div for more than 10 years, stated in a Facebook post on Dec. 9 that Mr. Mohan “is a kind, compassionate and humble person who goes the extra mile to help animals.”
He highlighted that ALL, a no-kill shelter, provides a haven for abandoned and stray animals, many of whom are elderly or sick and face challenges finding new homes. “These animals have a second chance at life because of Mohan’s hard work,” he said.
Mr. Shanmugam, an animal lover and adopter himself, acknowledged the difficulties ALL has faced, particularly following the COVID-19 pandemic. Donations decreased and funds dwindled, with the majority of resources being allocated to animal medical expenses.
While acknowledging potential lapses in management, Mr. Shanmugam emphasized that Mr. Mohan’s intentions are good. He suggested that seeking public assistance sooner and setting more realistic goals could have been beneficial.
Since December 2024, the Animal and Veterinary Service (AVS) has received reports from volunteers expressing concerns about the welfare of animals under ALL’s care. Mr. Shanmugam stated that AVS is addressing these concerns by working with ALL, volunteers, and other animal welfare groups and fosterers.
“It is good that AVS is taking steps to deal with the situation. The animals need to be cared for,” he said, reiterating the importance of understanding the challenges before passing judgment. He concluded by stating the focus should be on supporting animal welfare.
