A US-sanctioned tanker, the Rich Starry, performed a U-turn while navigating the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the operational risks posed by a naval blockade in the region.

According to maritime data, the vessel sailed east through the Strait of Hormuz into the Gulf of Oman at approximately 2 a.m. local time on Tuesday. The ship reversed course at about 3 p.m. and returned through the strait.

As of Wednesday evening, the Rich Starry was anchored southwest of Iran’s Larak Island.

Vessel Specifications and Cargo

The Rich Starry is a 188-metre (616-foot) oil and chemical tanker flying the flag of Malawi. It was reportedly carrying approximately 250,000 barrels of methanol picked up in the United Arab Emirates.

The vessel departed its anchorage off Sharjah in the UAE on Monday. Tracking data indicates it turned back within minutes of approaching the maritime chokepoint.

Naval Blockade Risks

The incident underscores how commercial vessels are weighing the risks associated with the naval blockade. Analysts stated that ships from no specific country are receiving “special treatment” in the area.
