U.S. Central Command deploys twenty warships for a naval blockade

The United States launched a fresh round of attacks on Iran early Wednesday morning, July 15, 2026, following a period of intensifying hostilities. U.S. Central Command (Centcom) confirmed in a post on X that it began a wave of strikes against Iran at 6 a.m. ET. According to Centcom, these strikes were designed to “further degrade military capabilities Iranian forces have used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.” The operation was completed by 7:30 a.m. ET.

This military action follows the United States’ decision to reimpose a naval blockade on Iranian ports and coastal areas, which officially began at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday. U.S. Central Command stated that there are currently more than 20 U.S. Navy warships and hundreds of military aircraft operating across the Middle East. “American forces remain vigilant, lethal, and ready,” the command stated in an online release.

Donald Trump threatens Kharg Island and intensifies strike tempo

The conflict, now in its 16th day as of Sunday, July 12, has seen significant casualties. Iranian officials reported that overnight American strikes hit an Iranian army barracks, killing at least seven troops and wounding more than 260 people across the country. Following the morning strikes, the U.S. resumed operations during daylight hours, an unusual move that signaled an increasing tempo in the campaign. President Donald Trump, speaking during a meeting with Prime Minister of Iraq Ali al-Zaidi at the White House on July 14, warned that military strikes would intensify next week if Tehran does not cooperate in peace talks.

The Strait of Hormuz remains the central point of the standoff. After the U.S. resumed its blockade, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard issued a statement carried by Iranian state media, threatening to block all oil exporting routes in the region. “The U.S. must expect other oil and gas export routes that serve the interests of the United States and its allies to be closed as well,” the statement read. It further asserted, “The region’s oil and gas exports will either be available to everyone or to no one.”

President Trump, calling into Fox News on Monday, claimed, we’re taking over the Strait. He also warned that further strikes could target Iran’s key oil export hub at Kharg Island. Tehran has signaled it will intensify its retaliation and has ruled out any ceasefire until attacks on its territory stop.

Israeli forces advance into Lebanon as civilian casualties rise

The regional instability extends beyond the Persian Gulf. In Lebanon, Israeli attacks killed at least 31 people and wounded 40 others on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, as Israeli forces intensified strikes and issued dozens of displacement orders. Panic has spread across southern Lebanon as residents flee the escalating assault, with Israeli ground forces reportedly pushing deeper into Lebanese territory.

In Beirut, a 21-year-old woman named Marwa Yazbek, who is from the Hezbollah stronghold of Dihariya, described the impact of the war from a refugee facility that was previously a school. The facility currently houses 400 people, including 120 children. “The bomb started beside us, actually, and then we tried to go and get our stuff,” Yazbek said. “We go different places first, and then we settle here because it is the best, the best place, although it’s not that good, but we’re making it.”

Inside Iran, the atmosphere remains tense. Heavily armed state forces continue to control the streets of Tehran, where checkpoints, roadblocks, and patrols have become common. Many of these checkpoints are operated by the paramilitary Basij force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), police, or plainclothes forces. These positions have frequently been targeted by drone strikes over the past two weeks, forcing forces to remain mobile or relocate to tunnels and bridges.

Amidst the escalating military action, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul told ARD television that Germany will not participate in a naval mission in the Strait of Hormuz for now. Wadephul stated that security in the waterway can only be ensured through broader diplomatic efforts. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have condemned the U.S. strikes as “blatant violations” of the ceasefire, claiming the actions have further damaged prospects for peace.
