The United States government has announced a temporary pause in airstrikes against Iran following a campaign that lasted 13 straight nights. According to UN Ambassador Mike Waltz, the military actions were suspended to provide diplomacy “some space” and prevent a return to a wider conflict.
Diplomatic Efforts and the Strait of Hormuz
President Donald Trump declined to approve a new military attack scheduled for Friday, stating that reaching a deal with Iran would be the smarter strategy. Trump confirmed that discussions are currently taking place in Iran. This decision followed the arrival of an Omani delegation in Tehran to discuss the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei described the talks with Oman on Friday and Saturday as useful, noting that progress was made and that technical and political consultations remain ongoing. Additionally, the Iranian parliament has started reviewing a draft law concerning the management of the Strait of Hormuz, involving economic, judicial, and civil sub-committees.
Military Stockpiles and Strategic Concerns
While the pause is intended to facilitate diplomacy, reports indicate internal concerns within the U.S. government regarding military resources.
Vice President JD Vance and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine both raised concerns that further escalation could dangerously drain
the diminishing stockpile of interceptors and other air defense munitions in the region. Despite the current hold, President Trump has directed the military to remain prepared for a possible return to major combat.
Casualties and Regional Escalation
The Pentagon has updated its figures regarding U.S. personnel affected by Iranian attacks, with official records showing four soldiers killed and more than 140 injured. Meanwhile, tensions continue to rise on other fronts. The Houthis, an Iranian-backed group in Yemen, launched ballistic missiles and drones on Saturday targeting Aramco-affiliated facilities in Yanbu and Jizan, two strategic oil facilities on the Red Sea. Houthi spokesperson Yahya Saree stated these strikes were retaliation for Saudi attacks on the port city of Hodeida.
Further friction persists as Iran’s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, condemned an attack on an Iranian ship in the Caspian Sea and warned that a response would follow.
Iranian Perspective on the Pause
The Iranian army has offered a different interpretation of the U.S. decision. Army spokesperson Abolfazl Shekarchi attributed the pause to a failure by the U.S. to achieve its goals in weakening Iran and in the Strait of Hormuz. Shekarchi described the situation as chaotic and undesirable for America
and suggested the pause might be a new strategy,though he noted that any U.S. withdrawal from the war would beconditional on the Zionists’ permission, according to Al Jazeera.
