A massive pile-up involving more than 100 vehicles occurred on Interstate 196 in Michigan on Monday due to a snowstorm creating “treacherous” road conditions, while a severe winter storm brings warnings of extremely cold temperatures and potential winter storms across several states.

Michigan Interstate Pile-Up

Michigan State Police closed both directions of Interstate 196 southwest of Grand Rapids after the incident, which involved over 30 tractor-trailers. Numerous injuries were reported, but authorities believe none are fatal.

Images and videos circulating on social media showed a large number of trucks and cars involved in the crash along a snow-covered stretch of highway.

Motorist Pedro Mata Jr. told The Associated Press he could barely see vehicles ahead while driving 32-40 km/h (20-25 mph) before the pile-up. He safely stopped his pick-up truck and then moved to the median to avoid being hit from behind.

“It was a little scary just listening to everything, the bangs and booms behind you. I saw what was in front of me. I couldn’t see what was behind me, exactly,” Mata said.

Winter Storm Warnings Across the US

The US National Weather Service has issued warnings for extremely cold temperatures or winter storms across states including northern Minnesota, Wisconsin, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York.

Officials are urging motorists to slow down due to the dangerous conditions, with continued snowfall and temperatures expected to fall to -22 degrees Celsius (-8 degrees Fahrenheit) including wind chill.

Freezing temperatures are also possible overnight into Tuesday across much of north-central Florida and southeast Georgia.
