Escalating Military Strikes Near the Strait of Hormuz

The United States has entered a third night of military operations against Iran, targeting air defense and missile systems near the Strait of Hormuz. While the U.S. aims to curb maritime aggression, Iranian officials report at least 30 civilian deaths and seven military casualties following strikes across the region.

For the third consecutive night, U.S. forces have conducted military operations against targets in Iran. According to Businessam, these strikes are intended to degrade Iranian military capabilities and deter ongoing attacks on commercial shipping. The U.S. Central Command confirmed that operations have successfully struck various military targets throughout the country over a five-hour window.

The scope of the U.S. campaign includes rocket installations, drones, and naval assets positioned near the Strait of Hormuz and along the Iranian coastline. This offensive represents a significant departure from the ceasefire established in June, which had been designed to keep maritime lanes open and facilitate nuclear negotiations. That agreement collapsed following persistent Iranian attacks on merchant vessels.

Casualties and Damage Reported by Iranian Officials

The human toll of the conflict is rising, with conflicting reports on the impact of the U.S. strikes. An Iranian spokesperson stated that at least 30 civilians have been killed in the southern regions of the country, with more than 260 others injured, as reported by NOS. The government has pledged support to the families of these victims.

Separately, the Iranian military confirmed that seven personnel were killed during a bombardment of a military base in the southeastern city of Bampur, located in the Sistan-Baluchestan province. According to the Nos, the strikes hit a guest house, several barracks, and multiple guard posts.

Regional Conflict and Maritme Security Stakes

The violence has spilled over into neighboring waters and nations. Iranian forces reportedly launched air strikes against targets in Kuwait and Bahrain, claiming they were hitting U.S. weapons storage sites. The situation in Bahrain became sufficiently volatile that the country’s interior ministry issued emergency security alerts to its citizens.

Tensions in the region reached a boiling point after Iranian cruise missiles struck two tankers belonging to the United Arab Emirates in the waters of Oman. That incident resulted in one death and eight injuries. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) maintained that the vessels had ignored prior warnings.

Economic Proposals and Future Targeting

Beyond the immediate kinetic conflict, the U.S. administration is signaling a long-term shift in its posture toward the region. President Donald Trump has proposed a system in which the U.S. acts as the “bewaker” (guardian) of the waterway, funded by a 20 percent levy on all freight passing through the waterway. The administration argues this would cover the costs of ensuring security for wealthy countries in the region, though the proposal faces significant pushback.

Critics, including high-ranking officials such as Ambassador Mike Waltz and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have warned that imposing tolls in international waters could violate long-standing U.S. policies on free trade and international law. Meanwhile, the strategic focus of the military campaign appears to be shifting toward sensitive sites. President Trump indicated that the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility, which had remained untouched since the conflict began in February, is now a designated target for future operations.

As the standoff continues, the Iranian leadership has signaled its intent to retaliate.
