U.S. House committees have suggested a series of security, diplomatic, and economic measures in response to religious violence and insecurity in Nigeria, including a push for the country to transition away from Russian military equipment. The recommendations follow a recent designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern by the U.S. President due to chronic breaches of religious freedom.
Other recommendations from the United States to Nigeria
The committees urged Nigeria to expand security cooperation with the United States, emphasizing the importance of American defense systems supported through sales, financing, and joint training initiatives. The recommendations, released Monday by committee chairman Riley Moore, also call for a demobilization, disarmament, and reintegration program to combat illicit guns and promote safer communities, while allowing farmers to practice legitimate self-defense.
Further measures suggested by the committee include countering foreign exploitation of illegal Chinese mining operations and their practice of providing protection money to Fulani militias. The report also recommends invoking and publicly publishing Country of Particular Concern Presidential Directives to identify and shame perpetrators of violence.
The guidelines signify a deepening of security cooperation between Washington and Abuja, though Nigeria’s response remains to be seen.
