Gunfire struck three synagogues in the Toronto area overnight, prompting a police investigation and increased patrols. No injuries were reported in the shootings, which occurred in the Bathurst Street corridor.
Synagogue Shootings Under Investigation
Police were initially called to reports of shots fired at a synagogue near Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue West around 2 a.m. ET. Shortly after, two more synagogues in the area were found to have been hit by gunfire, according to Toronto Police Service spokesperson Stephanie Staples.
“We will not tolerate it,” said Chief Myron Demkiw during a press conference Saturday morning. “Hate-motivated crime has no place in our city.”
Investigators are treating the incidents as targeted, but the motive remains under investigation. Police have increased patrols in the area and are appealing for witnesses and security footage.
Community leaders have expressed shock and concern over the shootings. “This is a threat to all of us,” said a representative from one Jewish organization, calling for increased support and vigilance.
Jewish groups across Canada have condemned the attacks and are calling for action. They described the incidents as a “crossroads” moment for the country, emphasizing the need to address rising antisemitism.
Police are continuing their investigation and have not yet made any arrests. They are urging anyone with information to come forward.
