Verstappen Addresses Future Amid Red Bull Struggles
Max Verstappen has publicly addressed his future with Red Bull, emphasizing his focus on resolving the team’s current performance deficits while stopping short of confirming his long-term plans. The four-time world champion, who has spent 10 years with the Milton Keynes-based outfit, faces a period of uncertainty as Red Bull struggles to maintain the dominance that secured him titles between 2021 and 2024.
Ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix, Verstappen addressed mounting speculation regarding his contract, which is officially set to run until 2028. “I don’t want to say yes and no, and this and that about my future,” Verstappen said. “I said already many times that if there was something new, I would say it myself.”
The driver noted that he is working closely with the team to address technical issues, including reliability concerns and rear wing defects that contributed to crashes in Austria and Great Britain. “Now we’re just looking to the future trying to fix current issues that we have on the car, but that’s an open discussion,” he stated.

Contract Clauses and Potential Exits
While Verstappen remains under contract, reports indicate that his deal includes a performance clause that could allow him to exit the team following the 2026 season if certain championship standings are not met. Following the British Grand Prix, it was confirmed that Verstappen will not place in the top two of the world championship before the upcoming summer break, effectively triggering the clause.
Despite the technical possibility of an exit, McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has publicly downplayed the prospect of signing the Dutchman. Brown stated at the British Grand Prix that recent discussions with Verstappen’s management “didn’t go anywhere” and emphasized his satisfaction with current drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri.
Former world champion Jenson Button, speaking on Sky Sports’ *The F1 Show*, suggested that Verstappen’s frustration with team turnover and recent car performance may drive him to seek a new challenge. “He puts a happy face on a lot of the time, but I think he’s very frustrated with the situation,” Button said.

Team Dynamics and Future Projects
Beyond his immediate racing career, Verstappen has begun exploring ventures outside the cockpit, such as supporting junior talent. He recently signed Dries Van Langendonck, a 15-year-old driver currently in the McLaren development program, to his own racing team. Verstappen described the collaboration as an “exciting project” aimed at guiding the youngster toward Formula 1.
Regarding his own team environment, Verstappen acknowledged the impact of personnel changes at Red Bull. “People come and go – I think that’s sometimes also part of the process,” he said. “Sometimes you want people to stay potentially, yes, but I think that’s just how life is, how sport is as well. You just have to carry on, try to find new talents.”
Expert Perspectives on a Potential Move
Industry experts remain divided on the viability of a move to a team like McLaren. Former driver Juan Pablo Montoya warned that switching teams carries inherent risks. “The grass isn’t always greener on the other side,” Montoya noted on his podcast, *MontoyAS*. “From a distance it looks very nice, but sometimes, when you stand on it, you say, ‘Oh, what did I get myself into.’”
Other observers have pointed out fundamental differences in team philosophy. While Red Bull has historically operated with a clear lead-driver structure, teams like McLaren—and Mercedes, another team linked to the driver—maintain a philosophy of fairness where both drivers are permitted to race each other.
As the Formula 1 season progresses toward the summer break, the pressure on the four-time champion continues to mount. For now, Verstappen insists his primary goal remains collaborating with Red Bull to return to the top of the grid. “On Wednesday I was back at the factory and then you prepare again for the weekends ahead,” he said. “That’s how I’ve been operating in all the years together.”
