Whitelee Windfarm Projected to Double Output With £1.5 Billion Rebuild

Scottish Power Renewables has announced a £1.5 billion project to rebuild the Whitelee Windfarm near Glasgow.

The turbines at Whitelee, situated on Eaglesham Moor, are reaching the end of their operational life after roughly 20 years of service. To prevent a loss in clean energy capacity, the owner is initiating a “repowering” process—essentially flattening the current site and installing more efficient, taller technology.

The £1.5 Billion Repowering Blueprint

The scale of the rebuild is significant. Scottish Power Renewables intends to swap the existing 215 turbines for around 124 new units. These replacements will be roughly 110m (361ft) taller than the current fleet.

The project will be executed in three phases over a decade. A full planning application is expected by the end of next year, following an initial application already made to the Scottish government’s energy consents unit. If the timeline holds, the upgrade should be fully operational by 2035.

Charlie Jordan, chief executive of Scottish Power Renewables, stated that the company was planning for when the turbines reached the end of their natural lifespan. Jordan added, At this critical moment in the push for home-grown clean, green energy, it's important we don't go in reverse and lose the clean capacity that's been hard-earned over the last two decades as it comes to the end of its operational life.

Economic Impact and Environmental Recovery

Beyond the energy yield, the rebuild carries a heavy economic and environmental footprint. The construction pipeline is expected to generate approximately £330m for the Scottish economy. From a sustainability standpoint, the company claims that 99% of the old turbines will be recycled.

Whitelee is a massive installation, covering roughly 83 sq km (32 sq miles)—nearly half the size of Glasgow. Because the site is a popular destination for dog walkers and hikers, Scottish Power stated the three-phase approach is designed to keep the moorland, its visitor centre, and the footpaths and tracks for walkers accessible to the public during the rebuild.

A Broader Trend in UK Wind Capacity

Whitelee isn’t the first site to undergo this transition, though it will be the largest to have all its turbines replaced. Last year, the Hagshaw Hill site in South Lanarkshire was repowered, replacing 26 turbines with 14 larger ones. This is a harbinger of a wider industry shift; analysts at Regen suggest that more than half of Great Britain’s current wind farm capacity will reach the end of its life within the next decade.

This creates a systemic need for repowering across the UK to maintain energy targets. The first phase of Whitelee had been commissioned a year prior to the 2009 opening and was the largest onshore wind farm in Europe at that time. Since then, it has been expanded twice to reach its current size of 215 operational turbines.
