Cemetery grounds near Wellington, New Zealand, were vandalized with tire marks after a series of burnouts took place at Whenua Tapu cemetery yesterday afternoon, leaving workers to clean up melted rubber.
Whenua Tapu Cemetery Vandalized
“This is the worst burnout damage we have seen here,” said cemetery manager Daniel Chrisp in a statement on the Porirua City Council’s Facebook page.
Chrisp added, “As kaitiaki of our loved ones, we’re all heart broken by this behaviour. Whenua Tapu is your cemetery, an urupa, a sacred place to remember your loved ones. Burnouts have no place within any cemetery grounds.”
Porirua City Council staff spent the morning scrubbing driveways and cleaning up the damage. CCTV footage captured images of those responsible, and the information has been passed on to police, according to the council.
