Heavy thunderstorms and lingering wildfire smoke have disrupted preparations for Sunday’s World Cup final between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. While officials confirmed the storm front should clear the air before kickoff, the weather forced Spain to cancel its final training session on Saturday.
Spain and Argentina Training Disruptions
The final preparations for the championship match were uneven for the two competing squads as severe weather moved through the region. Spain’s national team was forced to cancel its Saturday morning training session at a facility in Whippany, New Jersey, after officials detected lightning within an eight-mile radius.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) stated that the cancellation followed standard US storm safety protocols. In contrast, Argentina’s training session in nearby Morristown experienced a delay of approximately 45 minutes but proceeded as planned. Players from the Argentina squad were seen participating in a warm-up session, appearing unfazed by the conditions despite the area experiencing both steady rain and torrential downpours throughout the afternoon.

Air Quality and Wildfire Smoke Forecast
Beyond the immediate threat of lightning, the region has struggled with a visible haze caused by more than 950 wildfires currently burning across Canada. On Friday, New York recorded some of the worst air quality levels in the world, and conditions remained a point of concern for organizers heading into the weekend.
Tyler Roys, a senior meteorologist at AccuWeather, noted that the same storm system causing the training delays will likely serve as a benefit for the final. This storm front will largely move the smoke out of the northeast before the final between Spain and Argentina,
Roys said. While some faint haze may persist, experts do not anticipate the return of the thick, poor-quality air that impacted the area earlier in the week.

Stadium Safety Protocols and Official Response
The intensity of Saturday’s weather forced emergency measures at the stadium, with state police urging spectators and staff to seek shelter as heavy rain and loud thunder impacted the venue. New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued warnings regarding the potential for damaging winds and flash flooding, noting that thunderstorms are expected to bring damaging winds strong enough to down trees and power lines, along with heavy rainfall that could cause flash flooding,
according to his statements on X.

Tournament organizers remain in constant communication with local authorities. White House World Cup task force executive director Andrew Giuliani indicated that organizers are monitoring closely
as the final approaches. With 80,000 fans expected to fill the stadium, the atmosphere remains focused on the match, though the weather has been a defining narrative of the lead-up. Organizers remain optimistic that the worst of the smoke and storm activity will have passed before the 3 p.m. kickoff on Sunday.
