Zambia and Sweden have formalized their bilateral relationship with a new agreement for regular political consultations, signed Monday in Stockholm. The Memorandum of Understanding aims to strengthen cooperation on a range of issues, including trade, security, and climate action.
Zambia-Sweden Partnership: A New Chapter
The agreement commits both countries to scheduled discussions on topics spanning trade and development cooperation to peace, security, and climate action. Zambian Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe and Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard signed the MoU, institutionalizing bilateral dialogue that has existed since 1965.
Haimbe stated that the MoU marks “a new chapter in our longstanding partnership” between the two nations. Sweden has been a key development partner for Zambia for decades, providing support in governance, human rights, education, health, and gender equality. Cooperation has recently expanded to include climate action and a green economic transition.
Malmer Stenergard said the structured consultations would provide a platform for reviewing ongoing collaboration and exploring “new opportunities for political and economic engagement.” She emphasised that the MoU was designed to make cooperation more predictable and results-oriented, and to strengthen coordination on bilateral, regional, and global issues.
Analysts suggest the agreement reflects Zambia’s desire to diversify its partnerships, while Sweden seeks to reinforce ties with African nations amid evolving geopolitical and economic dynamics. Officials from both sides indicated that future meetings could address trade facilitation, investment opportunities, and joint efforts on regional peace and stability.
The institutionalised dialogue is expected to foster greater mutual understanding and lay the groundwork for expanded strategic cooperation.
