Zelenskyy Seals Azerbaijan Pact Amid Deadly Russian Strikes

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed security and energy cooperation deals with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Saturday, as Kyiv seeks to leverage its expertise in defending airspace during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

  • Ukraine and Azerbaijan established military-industrial partnerships and energy agreements.
  • Russian strikes in Dnipro and northern Ukraine killed 10 people.
  • A Russian drone caused the first recorded material damage on Romanian territory.

Diplomacy and Ukraine Security Cooperation

Zelenskyy confirmed the signing of an agreement regarding military-industrial cooperation. This move follows increased international interest in Ukraine’s experience downing long-range drones, particularly after recent Middle East conflicts involving US-Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

President Aliyev described the military-industrial partnerships as having “wide-ranging perspectives” and noted that the two leaders discussed joint defense production.

The Ukrainian leader also explored the possibility of Azerbaijan hosting future peace talks between Ukraine and Russia. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is ready for such diplomacy if Russia is willing to participate.

Casualties in Dnipro and Sevastopol

Russian attacks on the south-eastern city of Dnipro and other regions have left 10 people dead. Regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha reported that eight people were killed and 49 injured in Dnipro following waves of missile and drone strikes targeting residential areas.

Two additional fatalities were reported in northern Ukraine. Meanwhile, a Ukrainian drone attack in Russian-annexed Crimea killed one man, born in 1983, and wounded three others in Sevastopol. Moscow-installed governor Mikhail Razvozhayev stated that 43 drones were shot down in total.

International Escalations and NATO Spillover

Vyacheslav Volodin, speaker of Russia’s Duma, arrived in North Korea on Saturday to commemorate the deployment of Pyongyang’s troops to assist Moscow. North Korea has sent an estimated 14,000 troops to fight against Ukraine, with officials estimating that more than 6,000 of those soldiers have been killed.

In a separate incident, a Russian drone crashed in a populated area of Romania on Saturday following strikes in neighboring Ukraine. Authorities evacuated more than 200 people as a precaution and cut gas supplies in the affected area.

While Romania has experienced airspace violations since February 2022, officials noted this was the first instance of debris causing material damage. An electricity pole and an outbuilding were damaged, though no casualties were reported.
