U.S. President Donald Trump Outlines Potential Role for Syria in Lebanon

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on July 15, 2026, that Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa may handle the Hezbollah file in Lebanon, claiming Al-Sharaa would act with greater precision than Israeli forces. Trump suggested Israel should redeploy its troops from Lebanon to focus on Iran, while Al-Sharaa confirmed ongoing coordination with Washington regarding a potential resolution.

Trump’s Strategy for Hezbollah and Syrian Involvement

In an interview with the American network Fox News, President Donald Trump outlined a shift in approach regarding the conflict in Lebanon. He indicated that Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa is prepared to manage the Hezbollah file, asserting that the Syrian leader would avoid the widespread destruction seen during Israeli operations. Trump stated, He will do it in a different way, and added that he did not want to see the destruction that has occurred, noting that he hates seeing buildings being destroyed. According to Trump, Al-Sharaa would be more precise than the Israelis in his dealings with the group. When asked if the Syrian president required an American green light to proceed, Trump replied that he is “thinking about it.”

Trump’s remarks follow a broader push for Israel to adjust its military posture. He suggested that redeployment is the more accurate word when discussing the presence of Israeli ground forces in southern Lebanon. By shifting these forces, Trump argued, Israel could better concentrate its resources on what he identified as the “major issue,” in reference to Iran. Trump noted that he is dealing well with both Lebanon and Israel, an outcome he claimed is happening for the first time in years.

Damascus’s Diplomatic Engagement and Coordination

In late June, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa confirmed that his country initiated contact with President Trump in an effort to stop the war in Lebanon. Al-Sharaa expressed a willingness to sit down with all Lebanese parties, including Hezbollah, if it serves the common interest of Syria and Lebanon. In a television interview, Al-Sharaa stated: We have enough courage to announce our entry into any conflict or war openly if we decide to do so. He emphasized that the Syrian role is “purely positive” and determined by the common interests of both countries to serve the stability of Lebanon and Syria.

Al-Sharaa explained that President Trump expressed his annoyance with what is happening in Lebanon and is seeking to end the war there. The Syrian president asserted that one can rely on Syria to reach a positive solution that serves stability. Al-Sharaa’s comments highlight a strategy of active diplomatic engagement with the U.S. administration to influence the security landscape in Lebanon.

Diplomatic Pressure and Regional Security

According to the news site Axios, President Trump asked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to withdraw Israeli forces from Syria and Lebanon during a phone call held the week of July 7, 2026. Axios reported that Trump informed Netanyahu of the need to begin redeploying Israeli forces out of Syrian territory and urged similar steps in Lebanon. A U.S. official stated that Trump told Netanyahu that the presence of Israeli forces in Syria leads to increased tensions and could open the door to a new escalation. Trump reportedly told Netanyahu: They don’t want you there… you must redeploy, noting that the same position applies to Lebanon. The call between the two leaders occurred one day after Trump met with President Al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey.

While the administration works toward a security agreement, domestic U.S. policy remains in flux. The administration of President Trump recently directed officers of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to suspend most vehicle stops following incidents in which two people were killed in separate shootings within one week. Despite this, Trump stated on his “Truth Social” platform that ICE must continue traffic inspection operations, writing: We cannot abandon one of the most important and effective crime-fighting tools of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which is traffic inspections, in order to keep criminals out of the country!
