Passenger Boat Capsizes in North Maluku
Iwan Ramdani, head of the Ternate Search and Rescue Office, stated the boat was carrying 59 people when it capsized.
The vessel was traveling from Babang village to Pigaraja village in South Halmahera Regency when it encountered strong winds and high waves near its destination due to poor weather conditions. According to Ramdani, large waves struck the boat, causing it to overturn.
“The boat was hit by large waves and capsized,” Ramdani said. Authorities confirmed one death, 57 survivors, and one passenger remains missing.
Joint rescue teams immediately began evacuation operations after the incident. Search efforts for the missing person are ongoing, with personnel remaining on standby in Pigaraja village and surrounding areas.
“The team is fully prepared to conduct further search and rescue operations,” Ramdani said.
