Japan is getting closer to opening its first integrated casino resorts. These luxurious destinations will compete with those resorts already established in Singapore, Malaysia, and Macau – where tourists come from all over the world to enjoy the five-star luxury, experience the local culture – and of course, play at the casinos. Given the fact that Japan does not currently allow any stand-alone casinos, the plans for its first integrated resort continue to generate a lot of excitement worldwide.

Although the Integrated Resorts Implementation Act was passed in 2018, it did not become law in Japan until July 2021, where the process seems to be moving quite slowly. Only in April 2022 did the Japanese provinces of Osaka and Nagasaki formally submit their requests to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport, and Tourism for the building of integrated resorts. Therefore, it would appear that we will need to be patient, as it is predicted that integrated resorts won’t actually open until at least 2028.

What can we expect once they are open? The Nagasaki complex is expected to cost JPY483.3 billion (US$3.54 billion). The Osaka resort is expected to come in at JPY1.8 trillion ($13.22 billion). These locations will be the epitome of luxury and will include incredible amenities in addition to the gigantic casino floors. 

To get an idea of what we can expect, let us look at some existing integrated resorts from around the world: 

Caesar’s Place, Vegas

One of the best-known integrated resorts in the world is Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. It has luxurious rooms, a wide range of restaurants, and gaming areas that are known all over the world. From the rooms to the spa and baths, the entire area is theoretically designed to mirror the Ancient Roman style. Caesar’s Palace is famous for holding sporting events and live music.

First World Hotel & Plaza, Malaysia

With its 7,351 rooms and three-tower complex, the First World hotel is a Guinness World Record holder for its pure size.  The casino, shops, restaurants, entertainment venues and even an indoor theme park are all located in The Plaza, which is just over the hotel’s lobby.

Marina Bay Sands, Singapore 

Marina Bay Sands, which opened in 2010, was the second most expensive casino to build in Singapore. The Sands has a huge casino floor with 500 casino tables and 2,500 slot machines. For those who prefer something different from gambling, there is also a big theater, conference center and even a science museum. The most impressive site is the 500-foot long, 360-degree infinity pool on the 57th floor of the complex.. 

Solaire Resort and Casino, Philippines 

Solaire Resort boasts 793 opulent rooms, suites, and bayside villas. There are 15 top-notch restaurants, pubs, and lounges at Solaire. There is a casino measuring 29,000 square meters in size, along with a theater with 1,740 seats. Other amenities include a spa, fitness center, and outdoor pool with cabanas and a Jacuzzi. You can also find a conference center, retail stores, and an indoor shooting range. 

What will the Japanese Integrated Resorts offer?  

The Integrated Resort in Osaka will be located on an artificial island called Yumeshima. The project plan features a 10,000-square-meter hotel with approximately 2,500 guest rooms. A huge exhibition hall covering 20,000 square meters will also be part of the resort. Officially scheduled to open in 2025—the same year as the Osaka-Kansai exposition—it appears unlikely that this will be on schedule.

The Nagasaki Resort will include a convention center that will accommodate up to 12,000 people and attract around 9 million people on a yearly basis. Both resorts will be home to massive casinos with hundreds of table games and slot machines. They will also offer access to aquariums, theaters, fine dining restaurants, cinemas, shopping malls, and other top tourist attractions.

Each integrated resort plan is unique to the region that will be hosting it. Nagasaki expects to form a partnership with an already existing resort. Osaka is planning to build entirely new facilities on their own. 

Integrated resorts have proven to be popular with tourists and lucrative in other worldwide locations. The Japanese people and government will benefit a lot from the growth of the tourism industry, the taxes collected at the casino, and the large number of jobs at the resort. Therefore, it is in everyone’s advantage to move forward as soon as possible.
