Australia Social Media Ban: Teens Lose Access – Updates

Some schools in England are implementing restrictions on smartphone use during the school day, addressing concerns about distraction and well-being. The measures range from locking phones in pouches to outright bans, with some schools allowing only basic mobile phones.

Smartphone Restrictions in English Schools

At Brannel School in Cornwall, students secure their phones in locking pouches at the start of the day, regaining access at the end. Head teacher Tristan Muller-Forster stated the system is designed to combat “mobile fatigue.”

Chulmleigh College in Devon prohibits students from having phones visible or audible during school hours, with violations resulting in potential weeks-long confiscation.

Eight primary schools within the Empower Multi-Academy Trust in Shropshire have announced a smartphone ban starting in September 2026. Students will be permitted to bring basic mobile phones, such as flip-phones, which will be stored away during the school day.

Additionally, several schools in southern England are now permitting only “brick phones” – basic phones with limited functionality – to prevent access to the internet, apps, and cameras.
