Ed Sheeran’s stadium tour of North and South America was thrown into turmoil when four supporting acts abruptly quit in solidarity with the rapper Macklemore, according to the Chicago Tribune. The departures followed Macklemore’s removal from the Loop Tour after he made pro-Palestinian comments and performed his protest anthem “Hind’s Hall” at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium.
Ed Sheeran Tour Plunged Into Chaos as Supporting Acts Quit
The artists exiting the tour in the wake of the controversy include Irish acts Aaron Rowe and Beoga, the Danish band Lukas Graham, and Finneas, all of whom announced their decisions on Instagram. Rowe stated that as Irish people, they know all too well about violent occupation and forced famine, adding that he could not stand by and allow power to silence rightful voices, as reported by the Chicago Tribune. Lukas Graham similarly posted that money does not grant the right to own the conversation, noting that no one’s bank balance should dictate who is allowed to speak or acknowledge suffering.
Macklemore Dropped Following Onstage Statements and Venue Pressure
Macklemore was originally scheduled to perform at 10 shows on Billboard‘s reported schedule, but his appearances were limited to two nights at MetLife Stadium. During those performances, he addressed the audience, stating, A big part of the reason why I wanted to do this tour in the first place is so I could stand up in stadiums like this and say two words that are very near and dear to my heart: ‘Free Palestine.’

The rapper revealed on social media that Robert Kraft, owner of the New England Patriots and Gillette Stadium, called Ed Sheeran to inform him that Macklemore would not be allowed to perform in his stadium. According to Macklemore, Kraft rallied other venue owners to issue an ultimatum threatening to block the shows if the rapper remained on the lineup, a sequence of events detailed by ABC News.
Kraft confirmed the decision in a statement to WCVB in Boston and ABC News, explaining that based on Macklemore’s recent actions in New Jersey and a broader history of rhetoric deemed deeply offensive to the Jewish community, his participation in upcoming concerts at Gillette Stadium would cross a line.
Ed Sheeran and Promoter Respond to the Backlash
Ed Sheeran addressed the controversy in a social media post, stating that removing Macklemore was the decision of the promoters and venue owners, not his own. Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine,
Sheeran wrote on Instagram, adding that his contract was with the promoter.
Sheeran explained that he spoke with venues at length to try to find a mutual resolution, but the venue and promoter decisions were final. He stated that he chooses personally not to use his platform for politics, noting that audiences attending his concerts do not expect a political forum, though he acknowledged having personal views on the conflict.
The tour’s promoter, Messina Touring Group, stated that it had been notified by venues on the upcoming U.S. tour dates that concerts featuring Macklemore on the lineup would not be allowed, which would otherwise result in tour cancellations impacting hundreds of thousands of fans, according to ABC News.
