Five Bashews diewe arrested after hijacked delivery truck tracked across Kaap

Five men were arrested Tuesday following a truck hijacking in Manenberg and a subsequent attempt to sell the stolen goods in Eerste River. The coordinated operation involved the Metro Police and the South African Police Service (SAPS).

Hijacking and Arrests in Manenberg, Eerste River

Metro Police received information early Tuesday morning regarding the hijacking of a Toyota Hino truck in Manenberg, according to Superintendent Ruth Solomons, a Metro Police spokesperson.

The suspects stole a consignment of Bashews products and were tracked to Khayelitsha, where they transferred the stock to a different vehicle. They were then located at a shop in Eerste River and apprehended around 12:30 p.m.

“Members of the Makhaza SAPS Hijacking Team, together with Metro Police, swooped in and arrested [the suspects],” stated Constable Ndakhe Gwala, a police spokesperson.

The arrested individuals include four Zimbabwean men and one Bangladeshi man, ranging in age from 28 to 41. Stolen goods valued at approximately R150,000 were recovered and returned to the owner.

Police also seized the truck and six cellphones as evidence, with investigations ongoing to determine if the suspects are connected to other hijackings in the area. The suspects are currently detained at Kleinvlei SAPS and will appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate’s Court once formally charged.

Additional Police Operations

In a separate incident, Operation Shanela II raided an unregistered liquor outlet in Pelican Park. Officers confiscated 404 bottles of assorted liquor and arrested a 32-year-old man for dealing in liquor without a license. He is scheduled to appear in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.

In Ravensmead, a 30-year-old man was arrested for possession of an imitation firearm and ammunition. He will appear in the Bellville Magistrate’s Court.

Heideveld police arrested a 20-year-old man for drug possession after finding 50 mandrax tablets and 26 grams of tik. He will appear in the Athlone Magistrate’s Court.

Anti-Gang Unit members discovered a 9mm pistol hidden under a mattress during a search at a house in Fraser Lane, Forest Village, Blue Downs. An inquiry has been registered for further investigation.
